Day #6: Keokuk, IA

Charging Cables: Modern Life's Detritus

Living aboard an old tug makes me realize how quickly technology is advancing.  For example, Nellie's wheelhouse has a telephone wall jack.  How long until a kid asks, "What's that thing for?"  Mounted two feet above the jack is a chronograph--an expensive and accurate clock, that in conjunction with a sextant, can help determine our position.  Uh huh, like that's ever going to happen when we have nine GPS' aboard.

Burlington RR Bridge

Our plan was to spend tonight in Fort Madison, IA.  Quimby's recommended approaching the marina perpendicular to the bank so as to avoid the shoaling.  We did, and promptly went aground three times.  That's three more groundings than in our previous 1,100 miles on the Mississippi.

It was a long 12 hours underway.  The locks and a bridge really slowed us down.  Still, we made 91 miles and that ups the total to 415.  Tonight we're on the Keokuk Yacht Club's fuel dock, Mississippi mile marker 367.  DBH
