Day #19: Boarded but Escape to Baldwinsville, NY

The Erie Canal at Last

This morning started early for Bicki; 2 am early. She was awakened by the sound of footsteps on the deck. Not heavy ones, like a human's; but, rather soft and hesitant ones. The footfalls were accompanied by a hushed murmuring, like someone mumbling to themselves. Bicki got up and peered out the wheelhouse window. Walking along the caprail was a porcupine. What is the proper protocol for shooing away a quilled rodent? Apparently at 2 am it involves opening the Dutch door and yelling, "Get off my boat!" Surprisingly, or maybe not, the porcupine did so.

"If you can't afford the fuel you're going to have to park the boat," was the unsolicited advice from the marina fuel attendant after seeing my shock at their $4/gallon diesel price. Instead we cruised Nellie 16 miles, out of the way, to Brewerton and got 120 gallons for $2.99/gallon. We spent $6 to save $120, that'll help keep us from having to park the boat.

Everywhere Nellie goes she's like a one boat parade. People are always waving.  We always wave too.  It's what you do when you're in a parade.
