Day #28: Harbor Springs, MI

It's not often that we welcome bad weather.  However, cruising in Michigan is proving an exception to the rule.  It's high season here and the marinas are fully booked.  I'm more likely to get a Nobel Prize than a slip reservation at Harbor Springs.  Yesterday, the harbor master all but laughed at me when I called about a slip.  Ah, but then the weather turned ugly.

How ugly?  Much of the coast will see 10' waves this weekend.  Nobody looks at a forecast like that and says "Honey, lets go sailing."  When I called Harbor Springs again this morning there was no laughter.  A voice, with much less bravado, asked how long I'd like to stay,  "Until the weather improves" I said.  "Slip 22 is yours" was whispered in the same defeated tone that I image Lee used at Appomattox.  Now if only the Nobel Committee would call...

Nellie is Dwarfed by Her New Dockmates

Flowers are Everywhere

Petosky, MI to Harbor Springs, MI

Today's trip broke a long standing record for the shortest day's journey.  The new record is now 4 miles.  Looking closely at the track above you'll notice it curves a bit.  Leaving Petosky Nellie tacked into the waves and then fell off the wind as she approached Harbor Springs.  A smooth ride makes for a happy crew.  We now have 1280 miles under the keel.  Nellie may be dwarfed by her mates but she's proud to have a space in Harbor Springs' Municipal Marina.  DBH
