Day 30: Mackinaw City, MI

Mackinac Bridge Looking Northeast

We traversed the Straits of Mackinac today which is a milestone in that we've left Lake Michigan and entered Lake Huron.

Why is it Mackinaw City but Mackinac Island, Mackinac Strait and Mackinac Bridge?  It's a remnant of yet another clash between the French and British.  The French named the area Mackinac, which they pronounce Mackinaw.  When the British took over they spelled the word phonetically.  So, the battle rages on, one pronunciation but two spellings.

Wienerlicious in Mackinaw City

In the immortal words of Captain Ron, "They come on you fast and leave you fast."  Truer words were never spoken about the big waves on Lake Michigan.  This morning we found none of yesterday's 10' monsters. Thankfully they'd been replaced by some playful, 2' wee lads.

Harbor Springs, MI to Mackinaw City, MI

Today's trip was 51 miles and ups our total to 1332 miles.  Tonight Nellie's safely moored in the Mackinaw City Marina.  DBH
