Day #32: Mackinac Island Day Two

View of the Yacht Harbor from Fort Mackinac

Surge, that's the name given to potentially damaging waves which enter a harbor.  Mackinac Island has the worst surge I've seen.  We were forewarned.  Still, until you've experienced it firsthand, it's hard to imagine.  Thankfully the surge is predictable and occurs roughly every 30 minutes.

To keep Nellie from beating herself to death against the dock and pilings, all six hawse cleats and the bitt are employed to hold her off.  Nellie looks like a spider in the midst of her web.  So, what's the source of the surge?  The twice an hour mainland ferries which run from 9 am to 9 pm.

Good news, we're not Fudgies--the locals' pejorative name for Mackinac Island day trippers.  Bad news, the locals are a creative bunch and I'm not sure what they call us cruisers ;-)

No miles on Nellie today and so we're holding at 1340 miles for the trip. DBH
