In a recent discussion on Michigan resort towns, a Michigan local used the terms Cake-eaters and Pointers. Say what? Not wanting to appear ignorant I feigned understanding while hoping for elucidation during the course of the conversation. When none was forth coming I had to ask. Cake-eaters, are the nouveau riche. Not so clear was the fact that Pointers are from Harbor Point, MI.
Context is important and colloquial expressions can be verbal landmines, especially for visiting strangers, so I didn't push the Pointer thing. Today I learned the rest of the story. Harbor Point is where Michigan's wealthiest residents summer; the average house price is $15M; and, most importantly, only old monied families are welcome--no Cake-eaters allowed.
Tomorrow we head towards Mackinaw City and Lake Huron. As shown below, the seas are predicted to be calm along the route (which is shown in red).
Nellie is still at the municipal dock in Harbor Springs, MI. No miles today and holding at 1280 miles for the year. I'm now going to see if I can find some cake. Goodnight. DBH
