Nellie's now batting 1000 getting into Michigan's very busy marinas. Today's was probably the toughest. Mackinac Island has limited slips and, according to the reservations clerk, no vacancies. Local cruisers said that just showing up at the dock usually works. So, that's what we did. Sure enough, as soon as we entered the harbor we were assigned a slip. Cool! The slip costs $59/night which is quite a deal considering a basic room at the Grand is $465...
Every time I mentioned to someone that we'd be stopping at Mackinac Island they'd invariably say, "You'll love it." Well, they are right.
The logistics of island life are complex. The fudge shop's order came from the mainland by ship and then was delivered by horse drawn wagon to the store front--no cars or trucks are allowed on the island's roads. Hmm, from the picture we can deduce that fudge is made from a lot sugar and a little milk.
Mackinaw City, MI to Mackinaw Island, MI
It was 8 miles from Mackinaw City, MI to Mackinaw Island, MI. We successfully dodged a 1000' freighter in the Straits. It was close, but he missed. We now have 1340 miles under the keel this year and 5718 miles since leaving Naples. DBH
